Solidarity funeral assistance – a full guide

Marné Pienaar

Experiencing the loss of a loved one is never easy. Solidarity understands that when a loved one passes away, it not only carries an emotional toll but also has a financial implication on the family of the deceased.

Alongside protection in the workplace via legal support against discrimination and unfair treatment, Solidarity offers peace of mind during life’s most difficult moments.

If you are a member or considering joining, here’s what you need to know about our funeral assistance.

Who qualifies for the funeral assistance?

The funeral assistance benefit is only available to members who joined before 50 years of age, or persons who work at a collective company.

This benefit covers:

  • • The main member
  • • One nominated spouse
  • • Up to two dependent children under the age of 21

What does funeral assistance include?

The Solidarity funeral assistance offers comprehensive coverage and includes the following:

  • • Funeral services and the coffin as prescribed by the Group Scheme’s standard offering.
  • • Cash payout should the family choose to use another funeral undertaker that is not AVBOB.
  • For a full list of services included and excluded, please consult this brochure.

AVBOB or cash option – what’s the difference?

AVBOB is a trusted funeral service provider that offers professional and dignified service. By continuing with the AVBOB funeral option, the member qualifies for the coffin and services.

However, should the family of the deceased choose a different provider, a cash payout according to a scale is paid to the member. Click here to read more.

How to claim funeral assistance

Solidarity makes this process as easy as possible for you and your loved ones in difficult times. In the case of a loved one passing away, follow these simple steps:

  1. 1. Contact your general practitioner, pastor/minister and/or other family or friends for support.
  2. 2. Contact your nearest AVBOB branch to collect the remains and clearly indicate that it is a Solidarity funeral.
  3. 3. Please make sure you have a computer-printed marriage certificate before the death of the deceased is registered with the Department of Home Affairs.

You must also do the following:

  1. 1. Report the death to AVBOB within 6 months.
  2. 2. Submit documents: death certificate, member details and email it to groupschemeclaims@avbob.co.za.
  3. 3. Contact Solidarity for support if needed.
